In many companies, workers' rights are violated and they would like to make their situation known.

Unfortunately, for talking publically about these violations, workers are often fired. A good example was the recent case of Jarek, fired from BRW Sofa for an article in the paper about how the Labour Code was violated in his factory. And there are many situations like this.

Because ZSP published what workers said about that company, BRW Sofa has got the police on us - the Department of Economic Crimes - trying to track people down and presumably start some criminal case.
Nobody knows what crime BRW imagines we have committed. The company is owned by one of the richest men in Poland, and goes after workers and activists who defend them.

When the companies cannot get to the workers, they will even go after the organizations that support them. If those are not registered, then even after the owner of the domain name of the organization's site.

Because people can and have been fired and may find themselves in a difficult financial situation, and because we need money for legal help in different situations we now face, we have created an antirepression fund in order to help workers who have been repressed or are being sued for speaking about their working conditions.

- gobiernos y patronato recurren a medidas de austeridad, con el pretexto del combate a la “crisis”, que son verdaderos robos e intensificación de la explotación de la clase trabajadora y de los sectores más vulnerables de la población;

- los gobiernos suben los impuestos a los trabajadores, les disminuyen los salarios y reducen derechos conquistados por sus luchas en el pasado;

- los gobiernos recortan las pensiones, las prestaciones por desempleo y los varios apoyos sociales, pagos de antemano por los trabajadores con sus contribuciones, lo mismo sucediendo en la sanidad y en la educación, en beneficio siempre de los mismos: el capital financiero y el patronato en general;

- los bancos reciben apoyo financiero del Estado mientras las personas son obligadas a entregar sus casas a los bancos; el paro afecta a más de cinco millones de trabajadores en España y a cerca de un millón en Portugal y la mayoría de la población enfrentase diariamente con una vida de pobreza y explotación;

The bureaucratic trade union CGTP has called a general strike in Portugal and the CCOO and UGT have called for a general strike in Spain against the austerity measures for November 14. For this same day, general strikes are also being called in Italy, Greece, Malta and Cyprus etc. as part of a Day of Action by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC).

The position of the IWA and its Sections and Friends is that we are not only against the government of the "troika" and the austerity measures, but against the class society and against an economic and social system based on the exploitation of wage labor and environmental destruction. We are for works self- organizing and emancipation, and by this our struggle is directed against and outside the class collaborationist structures!
Our sister organization in Spain the CNT-AIT says in a declaration that the reformist CCOO and UGT after hesitation have called for the General Strike of 14-N which they have been dragged into: “On the one hand, by increasing social unrest and mobilizations in the streets and on the other, by the continued anti-labor measures of a government at the service of financial elites and employers with no intention of conceding even the crumbs that allow institutional unionism to justify their role.”

And further: “CNT has agreed to call a general strike for November 14 and we will do this in our own way, with our own demands. We say that this strike is necessary but is not sufficient and we call for it to go beyond the sterile and frustrating scenario of the institutional unions that people have become accustomed to”.

The AIT- Portugal writes in an article in IWA- External Bulletin-3 about the encouraging demonstrations on September 15 that mainly were convened through internet. It has been estimated that 500 000 people demonstrated in Lisbon and 100 000 in Porto, and there were demonstrations in more than 30 cities in Portugal.

Since then it has according to our Portuguese comrades been held demonstrations almost every week. They also see weaknesses and contradictions in the movement if it is merely directed towards political objectives as early elections etc, the dangers of nationalism and if they only become pressure movements and not “the growth of a social movement for the self-organization of struggles, with prospects for radical economic and social change”.

The Secretariat of the International Workers Association (IWA) sends hereby its support to the mobilizations of Spanish CNT-AIT and AIT- Portugal and the further steps that are so strongly needed to intensify the direct actions and solidarity.

It`s in these times clearly revealed that the “freedom” for the capitalists means economical dictatorship and slavery for the vast majority, and the IWA- Sections and Friends will both show solidarity to our sister organizations on November14 and protest against austerity measures, exploitation and oppression!

For workers self- organization and emancipation!
Long live the IWA and anarchosyndicalism!

The strike had a lower adhesion than the previous one but was marked by an intensification and radicalization of protests.

The Portuguese Section of the IWA (AIT-SP) has marked its presence in Lisbon and Porto, before and during the strike, with a campaign for workers’ self-organization and direct action and participating in the demonstrations that took place in both cities.

This general strike was held two months after the last congress of the CGTP, where a new general secretary, Arménio Carlos, was elected. Unsurprisingly, Arménio Carlos is also a member of the Central Committee of the Portuguese Communist Party.

The socialist run UGT did not join the strike this time, after having signed the agreement on social peace with the Government and employers, accepting historic attacks on workers' rights, imposed by a neoliberal government following the austerity plan of the IMF and EU.

The strike came at a time when the effects of the austerity policies are taking their toll on workers. Unemployment continues to rise sharply, standing now at 15% according to official figures (35% among young workers) and emigration reached values similar or even superior to those of the 1960s.

The call for general strike found the vast majority of workers disoriented or paralyzed by fear. Predictably, the adhesion to the strike was lower than on 24th November last year.

There was strong policing throughout the country, controlling the pickets and demonstrations that took place in several cities. In some pickets there were confrontations with the police.

In Porto there were arrests at a demonstration that expected a visit of the Prime Minister to the University.

In Lisbon, the control paranoia of the CGTP reached a new peak when its security service tried to prevent a movement of precarious workers, influenced by another leftist party, from joining the demonstration in front of the parliament. Another demonstration organized by an “indignados” movement also made its way to the parliament, but this time a few hours later. This demonstration was also joined by an autonomous march, with the motto “for the blockade and occupation of the streets”, which had previously traversed the streets of Lisbon, throwing eggs at financial institutions, including the Bank of Portugal, and chanting anti-capitalist slogans. The demonstrators were successful for several times at preventing the detention of protestors by the police, but on the central and touristic neighbourhood of Chiado, the arrest of a demonstrator caused clashes with police, resulting in several injured.

Although the strike was obviously weaker than the last one, the Government, for the first time we can remember, didn’t advance any estimates of the adhesion, refusing to claim a victory. Instead, it commended the peaceful and orderly nature of the initiatives of the CGTP, whose new general secretary made a statement on national television on the night of the strike condemning "all acts of vandalism".Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834365873591098376.post-64857523025328248052011-12-15T09:09:00.000-08:002011-12-15T09:09:32.186-08:00Portugal: Acerca de las medidas de austeridad y la última huelga generalEn el último 24 de noviembre una nueva huelga general tuvo lugar en Portugal, exactamente un año después de la última.

This was seventh general strike in Portugal in 37 years and the third convoked by the two main labor unions CGTP and UGT.

Since the last general strike the situation of workers in Portugal has aggravated. Following the International Monetary Fund/European Union bail-out in May, a series of austerity measures presented as the only way to reduce the state deficit and to “make the Portuguese economy more competitive” have been adopted. Workers have already been hit with increases in sales taxes, up to 25% increases in public transports fares and cuts in social and health services. Workers of the public sector will see their salary reduced by means of an extraordinary tax in 2011 and 2012. New harsh measures that constitute an historic attack on the rights of workers are being presented by the government, like reductions in compensations for firing workers, extension of the work day by 30 minutes without extra pay, extinction of some holidays, or the extension of the renewal period for short-term contracts. Unemployment has been rising in the last years reaching now 13% of workers according to official numbers that hardly reflect the real unemployment. The economy forecasts for Portugal predict the strongest recession on the euro zone in 2013 and a rise in unemployment due to the austerity measures.

This strike was strong on the public transports sector and affected the activity of schools, hospitals and garbage collection. The activity of airports was also reduced. Some big factories like Volkswagen/Autoeuropa also stopped production due to the strike. But on the retail and private services sector, where there is a high concentration of precarious and poorly paid workers, the strike went almost unnoticed. Fear of retaliations by the bosses continues to obstruct the mobilization of these workers and only the absence of public transports makes an excuse for participation on the strike.

This time, the unions organized demonstrations across the country. In Lisbon, a demonstration organized by the CGTP went until the Parliament, followed by another one convoked by the 15th October/“Indignados” movement. In front of the Parliament the participants of the second demonstration were met with a CGTP security line which tried to prevent them from uniting with the CGTP workers. A couple of hours latter, an attempt by a quite heterogeneous mass of demonstrators to break the police lines and occupy the stairways of the parliament caused some small clashes with the police. Seven demonstrators were detained and are now facing trials for offenses and aggressions against the police. Some were beaten by the police. A video of a demonstrator being beaten by an undercover cop has circulated around the web and was showed in television. In response, the police started an already familiar media campaign trying to portrait the detained demonstrators as “dangerous radical anarchists”.

The Portuguese Section of the IWA participated in the mobilizations both in Lisbon, Porto and Chaves. In Lisbon and Porto we made informative pickets and joined the demonstrations. In Lisbon our members entered in several commercial businesses and one big shopping center and distributed leaflets until they were expelled by security. In Porto, our inter-professional union joined the Porto Popular Assembly in the CGTP demonstration. In Chaves, our new local group distributed leaflets among workers.

Reducción de la jornada laboral a 8 horas;

Adopción de la semana de trabajo inglesa (de lunes a viernes);

Pagos extraordinarios por trabajar en condiciones insalubres;

Acuerdo para participar en los beneficios;

Instalación de dispositivos para reducir el calor dentro de la fábrica;

FF Mercantil, a company from Araxá-Minas Gerais, responsible for products of the Brazilian brand Finta and the Italian brand Lotto, keep their employees in a regime of extremely precarious work conditions and use different means to prevent them from organizing to resist their exploitation: the workers don't receive extra money for working in unhealthy conditions, they are exposed to excessive heat, they receive less than the minimum wage and many are the victims of humiliation, persecution and blackmail. The latest maneouvre to persecute by the bosses occured on March 22, with the dismissal of Ícaro Poletto, member of Sindivários Araxá, belonging to the Workers Federation of Minas Gerais, who was struggling together with his comrades to fight for their rights. The workers who did not surrender to the bosses are still being repressed.

FF Mercantil is connected to Filon Confecções in the city of São Paulo. We don't know what the conditions the workers have in Filon, but they are probably not different than the ones in Araxá, since both places employ the same logic, the logic of Capital, which always supercedes the rights of the individual and the well-being of the workers, constantly sacrificed to maximalize profits.

We demand that our comrade is reinstated, that the policies of repressing the free organziation of the workers end and the following demands of the workers of Araxá be met:

Reduction of the working day to 8 hours ;

Adoption of the English working week (from Monday to Friday);

Extra payments for working in unhealthy conditions ;

Agreement to participate in the profits;

Instalation of devices to reduce the heat inside the factory;

Respect of the workers' rights to organize.

FOR UNION FREEDOM!

The comrade was dismissed but we should continue our permanent boycott in support of his reinstatement and in support of those working there.

Economic boycott is our best weapon of pressure.

It's necessary to surround the factory and its directors, forcing them to respect the rights of the workers.

Without constant struggle there are no social rights!
The case dates back to 2006, when a large movement of denunciation and indignation was generated, assigning to the SEF the moral responsibility for the death of Ahmed Hussein, a Pakistani worker who committed suicide after his residence permit in Portugal was refused. Among the activists victimized by this trial was a member of the local group of AIT-SP (International Workers Association – Portuguese Section).

In the hands of the SEF

It all began in May 2006 when Pakistani workers from Oporto denounced the way in which the precarious worker Ahmed Hussein had been treated at the Oporto branch of the SEF. Hussein, married and father of two children, had been legally residing in Portugal for 5 years, a precarious worker like many thousands of others, both Portuguese and immigrants. He had been confronted by the SEF with the requirement to prove to have an annual income of more than 5400 Euros in order to renew his residence permit... Arguing justly that even many Portuguese workers did not receive this amount annually, Hussein demanded from the Portuguese State the refunding of his Social Security contributions so that he could return to his country. Ridiculed and badly treated – in which he was not, until today, the solely case in the SEF of Oporto! –, threatened with expulsion, as he told his friends, Hussein fell into a depression and eventually killed himself by jumping off the D. Luis Bridge over the Douro river.

Despite having in his clothes his personal documents (passport and tax number), his friends and family only knew what had happened to Hussein a week later, after searching for his body in the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Oporto, where the incineration was already being prepared without any communication to the consulate or to his relatives and friends.

The protests of June 2006

These events were then followed by a press conference and some solidarity public meetings of Portuguese and migrant workers. On the 24th of June of 2006, a public demonstration of grief and struggle went through the streets of Porto, with more than 600 people demanding the resignation of Eduardo Margarido, the director of the Oporto branch of the SEF, and protesting against discrimination and bureaucracy of those services. This demonstration had the support of various organizations from Oporto, including those that signed the call, that were engaged in various activities in support of immigrants and ethnic minorities.

The events involving the Pakistani worker Ahmed Hussein were after all the culmination of many discriminatory attitudes that violate the most fundamental "human rights" (we remember the maintenance of “illegal” immigrants inside containers transformed into a "temporary prison" by the SEF in Oporto’s Airport in 2004,) and corruption charges against officials of the northern branch of the SEF…

It is important to remember that in that same year of 2006 there were several serious episodes in Oporto revealing the discriminatory and racist way in which poor immigrants were being handled by the "authorities". The most serious of them took place in July, when the Egyptian construction worker M. Abbas, unable to work due to a work "accident" (we prefer to call it a bosses’ CRIME!), was taken for a "Moroccan thief" on the beach of Espinho, lead to the local police station and beaten savagely by the PSP (Public Security Police). At that time several organizations filed complaints against the police… that were all eventually filed and forgotten...

An attempt of legal intimidation

In December 2006, a process was moved by SEF Oporto against activists of four organizations of Oporto (Essalam, Terra Viva, AACILUS and MUSAS). They were charged with "aggravated defamation" against the Foreigners and Borders Service, for daring to denounce the way in which this police (and others) had been dealing with migrant workers.

In 2009, on the eve of the first session of the trial process, three organizations, Essalam, Terra Viva and Musas, signed a public statement declaring that “this process is primarily an attempt to intimidate immigrant workers and organizations who dare to fight for their legitimate rights, but this won’t make us shut up”.

The trial was postponed several times, there was an attempt to pass the case to the Criminal Court of Oporto (the old “Plenary Court” from the times of the fascist regime), which did not work due to the work of committed lawyers, and finally in September 2010 took place the first session of the trial.

In October 2010, before the facts and "accusation witnesses" - SEF officers who claimed to "know or have seen nothing" unless "the good name of the corporation" being put in question - the court pronounced for the acquittal. The court acknowledged that there was no factual evidence relating to allegations of the former director of the northern branch of the SEF, Eduardo Margarido - absent on leave, he didn’t deigned to appear in court ... It was evident that those activists were only acting according to the most basic values of solidarity and freedom.

Meanwhile, exploitation and precariousness continue to progress, affecting workers of all origins. Therefore, our struggle against exploitation by bosses, corruption of politicians and state officials will also continue!

To a large extent, this objective was achieved. At a time when the ruling class is fiercely competing for the crumbs they want to rob from those who already have little, a demonstration that pointed to another way of struggle and resistance had to be repressed by the police.

The mobilization began at 1:00 pm, with a concentration in Misericórdia Square. Here, some revolutionary songs were played and statements were read trough the loud speaker. A group of comrades distributed a soup among those present. Despite the heavy rain that began to fall, about 150 people started a march through the narrow old streets of the city centre, echoing slogans like "No state, no boss, self-management", "We do not negotiate our slavery! Our lives don’t belong to the bosses!” or "For sabotage and wildcat strike!". The demonstration proceeded to Quebedo Square, where the march of the CGTP (General Confederation of Portuguese Workers) was starting. The protest continued on the tail of CGTP parade throughout the 5 de Outubro Avenue, as the more lively and combative sector in this march. The demonstration then left the CGTP parade and continued its way towards one of the working-class districts of Setúbal. Despite the divergence with the slogans shouted by the bureaucrats of the CGTP, who were calling for the "struggle" trough the vote in the upcoming elections, there were no incidents or provocations, neither in this nor in other parts of the march.

The demonstration ended in Fonte Nova Square, where the demonstrators rested their banners on the ground and were preparing to rest and socialize. Revolutionary songs were heard again from the sound system of a car parked in the square. However, within few minutes, a group of policemen in a provocative attitude tried to identify and arrest those who were near the car. With this, began the confrontation between police and protesters, who tried to prevent the arrest of these comrades and to defend themselves from the attacks. Police used pepper spray against the face of some protesters and began firing rubber bullets against those who were in the square. A police officer even shot real bullets into the air.
The protesters managed to withdraw from the place together, but ended up being chased through the streets of Setúbal, being continually targeted by rubber bullets and police bats. Some people were detained for identification and beaten under police custody, and many more injured.

The police accomplished their goal, perfectly in line with the police State and the austerity capitalism under which we are living: to punish anyone who wants to protest beyond the controlled and ineffective acts of the official trade unions and movements of "outraged citizens". At a time when the Portuguese bourgeoisie, with the support of the IMF and the European Union, uses its means of mass propaganda to announce that the only solution to the "crisis" they created and that continues to make their profits, is to fulfill their age-old project – salary reductions, freedom to fire, privatization of essential services, etc.. –, the performance of the PSP (Public Security Police) in Setúbal is a strong sign that the gang that rules and exploits us, along with their obedient mercenaries, are not willing to tolerate demonstrations that enunciate any real and non-controlled form of struggle. With the proximity of government elections, they want to make us believe that the only way we can change something is by voting, when we’ve known for so long that voting only serves to legitimize a system that exploits and oppresses us.
The First of May is a day that evokes the age-long struggle of the exploited and oppressed around the world. We remember the so-called "Martyrs of Chicago" and we also remember the two workers – Antonio Verruga and Mariana Torres – killed by the bullets of the Republican Guard, a hundred years ago, on the 13th March 1911, in this same city of Setúbal. In Chicago, in 1886, workers fought for the eight-hour work day, facing the bullets of the police. To conquer them much blood had to be shed. In Setubal, in 1911, workers staged the first general strike after the fall of the monarchy in solidarity with the struggle of the women workers of the canning industry, confronting the armed forces of the Republic.

Today, like yesterday, we have the weapons against us and we find ourselves persecuted by the watchdogs of State and Capital. But today, as yesterday, we bear a new world in our hearts, and their blows against us only makes us believe more in the rightness of the ideals and forms of struggle we stand for.

Against repression, solidarity! Against exploitation, direct action!

United and self-organized, we’ll show them the “crisis”!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834365873591098376.post-86167654600776387052011-02-04T19:16:00.000-08:002011-03-15T19:17:20.484-07:00Neue Proteste vor dem Hotel Vincci in LissabonAm Abend des 29.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6834365873591098376.post-18462881887040116772011-01-22T18:45:00.000-08:002011-03-15T18:59:26.638-07:00Solidarity Action in Front of Hotel Vincci in Lisbon
On January 15, the AIT-SP made a solidarity protest in front of the Hotel Vincci in Lisbon (the only one from this chain of hotels in Portugal). For almost an hour information was distributed to the workers and clients of the hotel, as well as to passers-by. A banner and a sign which read "Don't just do nothing against Labour Exploitation!", "Organize and StruggleA" and "Hotel Vincci exploits and fires victim of industrial accident! Reinstatement for Manuel Puente!"
The action was a response to the appeal from the CNT-AIT Granada to make actions in front of hotels from the Vincci chain to protest the firing of its member, Manuel Puente.

Acties in Lissabon
